Higher Business Management

Course Description

Business Management is, as the name suggests, a study of how businesses are managed. The course aims to:

  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of the importance of business and enterprise in the UK
  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of how enterprises are organised and how they function
  • Develop an understanding of the contribution which information and IT skills can make to effective decision-making in different types of business
  • Develop problem solving and decision making skills
  • Provide a foundation for further study and training

The course is organised into three units: Business Enterprise, Business Decision Areas: Marketing & Operations, Business Decision Areas: Finance & Human Resources Management.

Entry Qualifications

The course is open to S6 students who have achieved or are at present working towards achieving a Higher pass in English.

Homework

Homework is given on a regular basis. It may consist of:

  • Completing an exercise started in class
  • Answering set questions
  • Revising notes for a NAB

Assessment

Internal Assessment - three assessments of one hour each. One at the end of each unit.

External Assessment - an examination of 2 1/2 hours consisting of an Interpretation item to assess knowledge & understanding, problem solving and decision making, and two extended answers to assess knowledge & understanding.

Monitoring Pupil Progress

A profile will be kept of your performance in NABs, class work and homework. This will let you keep a record of the areas you are doing well in, as well as setting yourself targets to help you improve as you work through the course. You will have regular opportunities to discuss your progress with your teacher.

Significant Dates

  • January/February - Estimate exam
  • May/June - Final exam

Further Details

Business Management gives a knowledge and understanding of how businesses are structured. It will give you the skills needed to set up your own business. If you are interested in a career in owning a business and managing it, you will find the study of Business Management important. A knowledge of Accounting and/or Economics would be an advantage but is not essential.
